BANDUNG, SEATIZENS – The Israeli military is investigating the potential death of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, following a recent attack in Gaza. On Thursday, October 17, 2024, Israel announced that three other Palestinians died during a joint operation by the military and the Shin Bet security agency.
“We are examining the possibility that one of the casualties is Yahya Sinwar,” the Israeli military stated, without providing further details about the operation.
Yahya Sinwar became the head of Hamas’s political bureau in August 2024. He succeeded Ismail Haniyeh, who died in an attack in Tehran, Iran, on July 31, 2024. Sinwar has since represented a strong figure in Hamas, according to the Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the group.
Prior to this role, Sinwar led Hamas in Gaza in 2017 and secured re-election in 2021. His leadership has made him a prominent player in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.
Israeli Military Tactics

Israel has targeted Sinwar as a primary objective in its current war in Gaza. The military considers him the architect of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, which occurred on October 7 of last year. This operation resulted in considerable casualties and impacted Israel’s reputation for intelligence and security on the global stage.
