BANGKOK, SEATIZENS – On July 1, the Constitutional Court of Thailand suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The court announced that she would be unable to perform her duties starting that day. The decision came after allegations that she had violated ethical standards.

The court, with a 7-2 majority, ordered the suspension until a final verdict. The court stated, “The Court, by a majority of 7-2, suspends the individual concerned from her duties as Prime Minister starting July 1 until the Court issues a verdict.”

A recording of Paetongtarn’s phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen leaked to the public. The conversation caused anger among Thai citizens. Many criticized Paetongtarn for seeming to insult the Thai military, which has significant influence and a troubled history with her family.

Despite the suspension, Paetongtarn accepted the court’s decision calmly. She told reporters outside Bangkok’s Government House, “I accept the decision.” She reaffirmed her commitment, saying, “My intentions have always been to do what is best for my country.”
