Phuket’s New Tourism Tax Exempts Foreign Residents and Workers
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) in Phuket has confirmed that the upcoming tourism tax, set to launch early next year, will not apply to foreigners living or working in Thailand.
A MoTS official advised that people await further details, as the tax has not yet gone to the Cabinet for approval, and adjustments could follow after review. The tax might be structured similarly to last year’s Cabinet-approved entry fees.
MoTS reassured that the tax will exclude foreigners with non-immigrant or immigrant visas and those holding work permits, as it aims to avoid burdening long-term residents and workers. The tax will apply only to short-term visitors based on their visa type, creating a distinction between tourists and residents.
The official encouraged staying updated on potential changes, as the policy may undergo adjustments before its final form.
