The Case of Mary Jane Veloso

In April 2010, authorities arrested Mary Jane Veloso at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta for drug smuggling. Law enforcement found her carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin. Her case drew international attention and showcased issues surrounding drug trafficking and capital punishment in Indonesia. In October 2010, the Sleman District Court sentenced her to death. Initially, she faced execution in 2015, but authorities postponed it, giving her family some hope.
Since that time, the Philippine government has worked diligently to secure Mary Jane’s release from death row. Her repatriation not only brings her back to the Philippines but also represents a significant step in the relationship between the two countries.
