BANDUNG, SEATIZENS – Prime Minister (PM) of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, asked President Prabowo Subianto for help. He requested Indonesia’s intelligence and military capabilities to promote dialogue among groups in Myanmar. The goal is for conflicting groups to meet and discuss peace.
During PM Anwar’s working visit to Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, on Friday, he and President Prabowo discussed Myanmar’s civil war. This conflict is a major concern for ASEAN, which Malaysia now leads since January 1, 2025.

“I ask for your help, Mr. President, to use all military and intelligence resources—not for attack but to promote dialogue and understanding,” PM Anwar said during a joint press conference. The conference was held in the Credentials Room at Istana Merdeka, after their bilateral meeting.
He highlighted Indonesia’s experience and history as valuable in easing Myanmar’s conflict and reducing tensions.
Regional Conflicts and Cooperation
PM Anwar also shared concerns about border conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia. He said, “We need to approach both countries to reduce tensions.”
He expressed confidence that Indonesia and Malaysia will continue supporting each other. Indonesia’s support has been crucial, especially as Malaysia leads ASEAN this year.
“During Indonesia’s ASEAN leadership, Malaysia fully supported us. Now, as Malaysia is in charge, Indonesia’s cooperation has been outstanding. This has helped us hold ASEAN meetings with partners like the GCC and China successfully,” PM Anwar added.
Upcoming ASEAN Summit

Malaysia will host the 46th ASEAN Summit on May 26–27, 2025. This will be the first time ASEAN holds a summit together with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and China in Kuala Lumpur.
Following PM Anwar’s request, President Prabowo called in the Head of Indonesia’s State Intelligence Agency (BIN), M. Herindra. Herindra was present at Istana Merdeka during PM Anwar’s visit. The President talked with Herindra, and their discussion involved three leaders: President Prabowo, PM Anwar, and the BIN Chief.
Foreign Minister Sugiono stood nearby during the conversation and observed the discussion. Herindra, after receiving instructions from President Prabowo and hearing PM Anwar’s remarks, expressed his readiness to support the initiative.
After a four-hour working visit, PM Anwar went to Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base. He then returned to Malaysia, ending his visit to Jakarta.
